I've spent the last few hours watching Coffee Prince, a K-drama that's starting to really grow on me! There's Yoon Eun Hye, who is surprisingly convincing in her asexual performance of a girl dressing as a guy, Gong Yoo, the dandy boy, Lee Sun Kyun, the guy with the handsome dog, and Chae Jung An, the sophisticated and unbelieveably cute artist who breaks everyone's heart.
I didn't think I'd like the series much after the first episode. I must admit to being disturbed by the idea of Gong Yoo falling in love with Eun Hye who he thinks is a guy. But up till now (only episode 4 hehe) everything's moved along pretty well. The character interactions and their developing and increasingly complex relationships come through well in the show. There are plays on platonic love and unspoken queries on the level of trust in a relationship, and I'm starting to appreciate the character played by Eun Hye even though I feel she looks so much better in a purely female role. ;)
Of course, one wonders what the title of the series has to do with anything. Well, somewhere in the middle of Episode 3, Gong Yoo is entrusted with an old and derelict cafe by his grandmother, who wants him to work hard (for once) and prove his worth. With encouragement from Eun Hye, Gong Yoo decides on a business plan which involves hiring "potential part-time workers (males only!) to: have a killer smile, be the type to be popular with older girls, have excellent skills, be single, be over 175cm tall, have a good body." These men will be the so-called Coffee Princes in the Coffee Prince cafe.
I might blog more about this wonderful series at another time. But that'll be after I'm back from India. Haha. Pray for me! (:
On a side note, the latte art briefly shown in episode 4 is really pretty! Look at the Panda face one haha. (Picture taken from Dramabeans.)
